California City Launches Disaster Preparedness Workshops

As fire season approaches, California City's most vulnerable citizens are getting a helping hand from their firefighters. California City Firefighters held the first of two disaster preparedness workshops last week to highlight evacuation planning and special precautions for the elderly population in the event of a disaster. California City Firefighters Local 3903 has partnered with the California Fire Foundation to bring public service announcements and evacuation planning materials to elderly individuals at these disaster preparedness workshops.

Firefighter Fatalities in the United States in 2008

For the third year in a row, 103 firefighters died while on duty.  In 2008, the largest share of firefighter deaths occured while responding to, or returning from, emergency calls, with 39 fatalities.  Among those 39, 12 died of sudden cardiac events or stroke and one died when he was pinned between a tanker and a bay door when a pickup truck crashed into the door.  More...

San Diego's Emerald Society Unveils Tribute to Fallen FF

Hundreds of friends, family and fellow firefighters paid tribute to the former Camp Pendleton firefighter, California-native and Marine, Sgt. Brian E. Dunlap by gathering at San Diego’s Hook and Ladder Firehouse Museum.The ceremony commemorated Dunlap with a permanent display of his dress blue and firefighter uniform that will remain in the museum.

California Fire Foundation Launches Disaster Evacuation Awareness Campaign to Educate Senior Citizen Community

SACRAMENTO, California- In an effort to raise awareness of special safety measures senior citizens must take when planning for a disaster, the California Fire Foundation is launching a statewide campaign aimed at educating senior citizens about the importance of taking special precautions when making an evacuation plan.

The "Disaster Planning for the Elderly" campaign is designed to teach senior citizens, their families and caregivers how to make sure all needs are taken into consideration. While having an emergency supply of food and water, mapped out evacuation routes and emergency contacts are standard in any evacuation plan, senior citizens must take medical conditions and physical limitations into consideration when planning for possible disaster.

California Fire Foundation Sponsors American Heart Association Luncheon

Recognize the symptoms of a heart attack and call 9-1-1 as early as possible. This was the message that Contra Costa Fire Captain and CFFJAC Women's Commissioner Lisa Beaty brought home to the crowd of over 400 women that gathered at the annual American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Luncheon in Sacramento.
