LODD: Contra Costa Capt. John Nunes Loses Battle with Leukemia

The United Professional Fire Fighters of Contra Costa County Local 1230 is deeply saddened to announce the death of one of its long time members in the line of duty.

Captain John Nunes, who served more than three decades with the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, died the morning of March 31 from leukemia.

Dedicated to his profession, Brother Nunes served as a reserve to the Contra Costa Fire Protection District for eight years before being hired full time on April 1, 1983.  In 1990 he was promoted to Senior Firefighter, and in 1998 he was promoted to Fire Captain.

Brother Nunes left his mark on the fire department in a big way.  He was instrumental in developing the supply division and a key player in the technical rescue program.  This April, Brother Nunes will have completed 32 years of service.

Brother Nunes was extremely dedicated to his family and his church.  He was laid to rest in a beautiful ceremony on April 4 in Pleasant Hill.  He leaves behind a large and loving family and will be severely missed by all.
