A young and aspiring firefighter with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Lawrence Gallez was fatally injured in the overturn of the rig he was traveling on during an emergency fire response in Grass Valley, California. Enthusiastic to be a part of the profession, Lawrence was part of a young crew of firefighters recruited by CDF to meet the shortage of manpower. He was only 21 years old. Noted for his positive disposition, Lawrence had faced several severe handicaps in his youth. Spending much of his childhood in the Shriner’s Hospital at San Francisco, Lawrence conquered these obstacles and his health was eventually restored. Living a life filled with determination and integrity made Lawrence an exemplary firefighter and proud member of CDF. His strength and courage are a clear reflection of his spirit and character.
