Heather Yonan would like to be a school teacher and write a children’s book aimed at helping children deal with the loss of a parent at a young age. Nicole Herman would like to be an emergency room doctor so that someday she can save someone else’s father.
These hopes and dreams come from children of firefighters in California who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty.
Each year, the California Fire Foundation awards scholarships to the children of fallen firefighters to help them pursue their dreams. The Daniel A. Terry Scholarship provides financial assistance for higher education to the children of California’s fallen firefighters, as part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting these families.
The California Firefighters Endowment provides the support structure for these scholarships. It is the goal of the Foundation to raise $2,000,000 of endowed funds to make the scholarship permanently sustainable and to meet the growing needs of firefighter families. For the children of fallen firefighters, these scholarships are often life-changing. The program is also an assurance to every California firefighter that if the need arises, his or her children will get the support they need to achieve their dreams of a college education.
Each initial Daniel A. Terry scholarship award is $2,000. As of 2019, scholarships have been made renewable for up to four years, for a total award package of up to $8,000. The expansion of the scholarship has been made possible thanks to the generosity of those who support the California Firefighters Endowment.
To continue to provide support for the children of fallen California firefighters, the Foundation is seeking new and expanded partnerships to grow the California Firefighters Endowment.
