LODD Announcement: National City Fire Department Firefighter Michael Mejia

It is with profound sadness that the National City Fire Department and the National City Firefighters, Local 2477, announce the passing of one of their own.
Michael ‘Mike’ Mejia passed away on February 5, 2026, from a job-related illness at the age of 58.
His passing is a profound loss to his family, his department, and the greater fire service community, and he will be remembered for his caring heart, his humor, and the lasting impact he made on the community and the many lives he touched throughout his career. As a firefighter, he embodied the finest qualities of a dedicated and compassionate public servant.
Mike began his service with the Del Mar Fire Department in 1993 as a Paid-Call Firefighter and was later promoted to Student Firefighter. In 2000, he was hired full-time by the National City Fire Department, where he proudly served the remainder of his distinguished 25-year career.
Throughout his service, Mike was known for his unwavering commitment, professionalism, and deep care for both his community and his fellow firefighters. He exemplified the values of integrity, pride, and dedication that define the fire service. A passionate advocate for protecting others, Mike took great pride in being part of the fire service family.
Mike was one of the founding members of the National City Fire Department Honor Guard and Color Guard. Respected by his peers for his experience and bravery, Mike was equally admired for his storytelling and sense of humor, often bringing laughter to those around him. Beyond his department service, he remained committed to his broader community, serving the Del Mar Fairgrounds for more than 30 years as a Medical Unit Leader and EMT.
Outside of his career, Mike was a devoted husband and father who placed family at the very center of his life. He believed in a simple but unwavering truth: family comes first. He cherished not only his immediate loved ones but also a wide circle of extended family who deeply felt his loyalty, generosity, and love.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Marin, and their two daughters, who were his greatest pride and joy. The moments they shared, whether at home or while exploring the world, were the true highlights of his life.
Memorial services will be held to honor Michael Mejia's dedication and service.
