Department: Contra Costa County

Deceased: May 01, 2006

James J. Capra With his father as an engineer with the Berkeley Fire Department, Jim Capra knew early on that he would grow up to become a firefighter. In 1973, he was hired by the Contra Costa Fire Department and was later promoted to engineer. After dedicating over 20 years to the job, he was diagnosed with job-incurred Hepatitis C. Devoted to the profession he loved, Jim continued to work until his illness forced him to retire in 2003. One of his proudest moments came in 1995, when he testified before the California Legislative Committee on the Infectious Disease Presumption Bill. In 2004, the International Association of Fire Fighters asked him to participate in a training video for the prevention of infectious diseases: "The Jim Capra Story". He is a true hero for always putting the needs of others before himself. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; daughters, Sara and Lisa; and grandchildren, Dylan and David
